This first style of fishing reel made an appearance in a 13th-century painting by Ma Yuan. The radial arm reel—termed Indiana style after the region that popularized them—is similar to those used by early-20th-century anglers. These are simple, gearless reels with open-ended arms to receive a fishing line.
